How to fit a Door lock by DesignerHandle

Its very important to protect your home with good quality locks. It is recommended to fit two locks such cylinder rim lock and mortise deadlock. The cylinder rim lock would be fitted from the top and a mortise deadlock would be from the bottom. Both of these can be locked from both sides as well. Here is an easy guide leads you, how to fit a cylinder rim lock on a door?

You will need a Drill, Ruler, Masking type, Pencil, Flat bit, Cylinder rim lock, Tape measure, Screwdriver, junior hacksaw, Drill bit set, Mallet and Chisel for fitting the lock.

You will have to buy a cylinder rim lock that can be deadlock.

First step: Mark the position

Mark up the position on the door, then tape the paper template provided to the door mark the lock body and screw hole positions.

Second step: Drilling a hole

Drilling the hole for the lock, you will need for a wide flat bit around 32mm to 1.25in. Secure the door in a moveable workbench and set the drill on a fast speed to reduce splintering. After drilling the hole check the cylinder if the hole is fit or not. The hole must be good fit to the cylinder edges.

Third step: Fitting the lock together

You should use a narrow drill bit to make the holes more suitable for screws fixing. Fit the mounting plate to the inside of the door. Pass the cylinder through the door from the out side to get the edge of the measuring bar against the instructions of the manufacturer. Cut the bar to the right size with a hacksaw.

In order to make the lock body fit neatly on the door, make sure to hold the casing in the spot and draw around the plate that drapes around the edge of the door. Now cut a recess with a chisel and mallet to house the lock edge.

Forth step: finishing

Fit the lock together and fix all the screws on the back side of the door. Check the key either if it works or not. If not so you will need to enlarge the cylinder hole.

Now you will need to fit the staple on the door frame. Close you door and mark the point of the bolt on the door frame. Cut out a recess through the chisel and screw the staple to the frame. Check the lock closes and locks perfectly.
